The context
Dunkerque Hospital (CHD) is the lead facility of the GHT du Dunkerquois, the regional hospital group (GHT) for the Dunkerque area. Each year, it handles more than 60,000 acute care (MCO) stays and employs more than 2,000 professionals, including 300 physicians.
Like many hospitals, CHD faces increasingly complex PMSI coding and limited staff, which makes it hard to value all of its activity fully and accurately. To meet this challenge, CHD chose to work with Parallel on two goals:
- Strengthen its medical coding now.
- Prepare for fully automated coding in the medium term.
The solution
The partnership with Parallel follows an approach designed to deliver fast, measurable results with little demand on the IT department or the Medical Information Department (DIM).
Parallel’s generative AI analyzes patient records, both structured and unstructured, to identify and justify recoding opportunities in full compliance with PMSI rules (the official Guide méthodologique, CoCoA and Agora). Each code proposal is backed by excerpts from the medical record, so every decision can be traced.
The process has four steps:
- Parallel’s proprietary algorithm uses the RSS (standardized discharge summary) to target stays with high potential.
- Data is collected through a secure SFTP upload or retrieved directly from the hospital’s software (remote access and RPA).
- AI analyzes the complete record, both clinical and administrative.
- The DIM team validates the suggestions.
No IT development was needed. Parallel is paid only on validated gains, under a 100% performance-based model with no financial risk for the hospital.
A strategic partnership
Following this first collaboration, a second project was launched with Saint-Omer Hospital, which is also a member of the GHT du Dunkerquois. This step-by-step rollout shows how a GHT can share best practices and innovative tools across its facilities.
Dunkerque Hospital and Parallel are now working to:
- automate the entire medical coding process step by step;
- integrate Parallel’s solution directly into the DIM’s workflows, so this innovation becomes a lasting part of how the hospital works.
